AN EICHLER-INSPIRED MODERN LANDSCAPING PROJECT

A Modern Landscaping Project Lucas Valley, Marin County

Inspired by Joseph Eichler’s vision for an outdoor space, this design-build modern landscaping project has a curvilinear pool and spa, plantings, a redwood fence and gates, and a retaining wall. The pool featured an elevated hot tub and waterfall, overlooking the Lucas Valley hillside. To make enough usable space on the property, we installed a retaining with natural bluestone ledge stone veneer. This created room for a large pool and patio area below, as well as space for a small orchard of fruit and citrus trees on the hillside. The pool patio was a custom color of poured concrete to compliment the dark blues and grays of the bluestone veneer and home color. The bluestone coping around the pool required custom templating due to its curves. The pool's plaster was also cool blue and gray with a pebble sheen, to create a ‘natural’ water look. Sitting above the pool is a retaining wall, with a built-in spa and waterfall above. Adjacent to the pool patio, we installed a play area for young children and dogs that featured a large turf lawn. Years later, after the death of a large pine tree, we revisited the property’s side yard and updated it to a tranquil meditative space with a new concrete patio for lounging, a metal pergola shade, and low-water plantings that provided year-round color and interest.
